Pittsburgh, once industrial, now chic | National Post

Very nice article by Margaret Swaine, a Special Correspondent to the National Post (first time I think I've ever heard Pittsburgh called "chic" though). I saw in the comments below the article someone mentioning the overabundance of cloudy days in Pittsburgh. I've been back 16 years now, I just don't get that impression at all, the weather seems very balanced.

Pgh highlighted by @JonBruner in Forbes as a "Comeback City"

"in 2009, the losses turned to gain: after several years of both growing in-migration and falling out-migration, more taxpayers moved to Allegheny County than moved out that year."

Thanks to @eventsgeek for the heads up!

Buffalo looks to Pittsburgh for ideas

"Pittsburgh is another Rust Belt “second city” where much work has been done to bring new economic life to a place the financial class long ago wrote off as having labor costs that are too high and environmental regulations that are too tough. For two decades, even as Pittsburgh and its surrounding region have mirrored Buffalo’s population decline, the foundations and universities in Pittsburgh, and a state-funded program called the Ben Franklin Technology Partners, have made extraordinary efforts to nurture startups even as Carnegie Mellon University has become known as the international leader in computer engineering."

According to the Washington Post, not old is Portland "out" and Pittsburgh "in", but flying lessons are "IN". My aviation goal this year is to see at least one friend get their private ticket.
